The Student Becomes the Teacher

The “student as teacher” tutorial system employs active learning by having students present a selected topic to their class during tutorials. This topic is assigned at the beginning of the course, the presenter is given 15 minutes to explain the topic to the class, and the presentation is followed by a class discussion on any unclear details. Each presenter is given a grade by the student audience, which comprises a small percentage of a student's overall grade for the course.
The tutor plays two roles: (1) students meet with the tutor to review their teaching plan, and (2) the tutor serves as a moderator to ensure that grades are assigned fairly.
This idea is based on the results of Lagowski (1990):
“students usually retain 10% of what they read; 26% of what they hear; 30% of what they see; 50% of what they see and hear; 70% of what they say; 90% of something they say while they are doing a task.”
These tutorials are therefore based on the presenting students “saying while doing” while the listening students “see and hear”.  This maximizes the effectiveness of the tutorial itself without increasing the workload of the instructor/tutor.
