One-Minute Reflections

For the 1-minute reflection, students are given a piece of paper and asked to write a one-minute essay after every lecture, saying (i) what they learnt and (ii) what they found most unclear. The lecturer can review the reflections and spend 5 to 10 minutes of the next lecture explaining the most confusing part. This process can help lecturers improve their lecture content and format for upcoming classes. Furthermore, it can help in setting appropriate exam questions.
Alternatively, at the end of each lecture, students could be given a short multiple choice quiz which they could respond to using “clickers.” The results can be displayed using the classroom projector, allowing for immediate visualization of student performance and giving students the opportunity for self-assessment. For the instructor, this format would serve the same purpose as the 1-minute reflection.
