If you want to have innovative, creative, self-managing students, then you should provide them the necessary time, tools, space and freedom. My idea consists of an in the curriculum integrated “autonomous working period”, which has the following properties:Every week, there shoud be a spesific time period (ideally a single period of 4-6 hours) within the weekly course programm, during which, the student work
individually or with whomever, he likes;
however, he likes; (the necessary laboratories and equipments for should be reserved for the students )
on a subject of his choice (within the departement-related subjects; theoretical or practical, like realizing an electirical circuit, shown in the lectures)
The one and only demand on the universities part is, that, at the end of each weekly period, every student/group has a result to present. The results should then be assesed by an higher semester student, who will also be responsible for giving feed-back and grading.
